This Damn House

Either that wallpaper goes or I do

3 notes

Let’s start off the photos with what was probably the biggest project (and the first thing we did) (and by “we” I mean my mom). I got permission from my landlord to remove the bathroom trim where needed, and uh…this was needed. Wood that was poorly cut and didn’t even line up in the first place, and was now too rotten to be nailed back to the wall in the second place and was also broken and irreparable in the third place. The rest of the trim in the apartment that had gaps, we just filled in with caulk, but this Had To Go.

So, after getting the trim off the wall, we filled in the dents and tried to true-up the corner. (Note: there is a difference between “level” and “true”. In older homes, you’re never going to achieve the former, unless you re-level the floor or the foundation of the entire house.) One of the best things about the modern age is color-change materials for home repairs. I’ve used color-change paint for ceilings before (it’s pretty handy), but the best use I’ve found is for spackle. Goes on bright purple, dries clear, and ensures you get spackle everywhere you want (not where you don’t) and you don’t try to do anything to it before it’s completely dry. Once it had dried, we painted it, and ta-da!

No more disgusting bathroom corner.
